Is Well Water Hard or Soft?

There are more than 15 million homes in the United States that use well water. Unlike city water, groundwater is not regulated, which means it often contains heavy mineral content and dissolved organic material. So, if your home relies on well water, there’s a large chance that you deal with the consequences of hard water.

While not all well water is hard water, it is much more likely for it to be hard than soft. That’s because this water flows through layers of earth, soil, and rock before it reaches your aquifer and eventually, your home.

Let’s go over some facts about well water:

Your Water Hardness Depends on Local Geology

Certain parts of the country have harder water than others. For example, Florida is known to have some of the hardest water nationwide. That’s due to the geology of these different regions. While sedimentary rocks, like sandstone and limestone, have a high water-soluble mineral content, igneous rocks, like granite, have a low mineral content. In other words, sedimentary rocks produce harder water than igneous rocks.

Signs That Your Well Water is Hard

While hard water will not harm your overall health, it could certainly be a nuisance. Watch out for some of these telltale signs that you have hard water running through your home’s pipes:

  • Tap water that tastes and smells odd
  • Your hair feels dry and brittle after bathing
  • Your skin is rough and flakey after washing your face or hands
  • You notice crusty buildup on your water faucets
  • Dishes that have dry spots after cleaning
  • Clothing that is rigid and faded after pulling it out of the washing machine

Hard water could impact the longevity of your water-using appliances, resulting in costly repairs and replacements. So, if you find that your kitchen appliances continuously break or cease to operate efficiently, hard water may be the culprit.

A Water Softener System Can Treat Your Hard Well Water

The most effective treatment to remove hard minerals from your water supply is a water softener system. A water softener will remove calcium and magnesium particles and replace them with positively charged sodium ions. This will result in softer water, eliminating the risk of future limescale issues.

Tony, the technician/plumber from Florida Energy Water & Air, was most pleasant, knowledgeable, professional. He arrived on completed the replacement of very old water heater including nearly 100% disappeance of the "knocking noise" in less than an hour, and cleaned up the work area very nicely at the end. I highly recommend his and FEWA to anyone needing these kind of services. Thanks Tony !
