How to Use a Water Softener

So you’ve decided to invest in a water softener to finally address the hard water in your home. You might have even found a company to install it for you. But the next step is figuring out how to use your new water softener so that you can maximize your benefits and ensure you have softened water throughout your home. Fortunately, using a water softener is relatively easy and only requires a little bit of work on your end.

    Water Softener Installation and Setup

The first step in being able to use a new water softener is to select a model and have it installed. The right model will depend on a number of factors, such as the hardness of your water supply and your household’s average water usage. Additionally, there are different brands, different capacities, and other options to sort through. The installation itself can take some effort as well. It requires turning off the water and hooking up the system to your existing water supply. For most homeowners, it’s best to turn to the professionals for these initial steps in the process. A company that specializes in water softener installation can help determine the product that’s just right for your home. They can also ensure your new water softener is properly installed and hooked up to your water lines to provide softened water throughout the entire house.

    Using Your New Water Softener

Once the installation is complete, much of the water softening process is automatic. Your water supply will enter the water softener to become softened, and then enter the rest of your home to reach each faucet, showerhead, and appliance using water. The water softener works through ion exchange. A filter of resin beads uses a negative charge to attract the minerals inherent in hard water, causing them to cling to the filter. Once that charge is “used up,” the water softener tank will regenerate to effectively reset the resin. This process involves the resin running through a brine tank of salty water. The water softening process and regeneration process all happen automatically without requiring any effort on your part. The only part you have to worry about to keep your water softener functional is occasionally adding salt pellets to the water softener. Depending on your water usage, you may need to add salt to the tank every other month. During the installation of your water softener, your technicians can show you where to add salt and how to check on the system. Other than that, your water softening system is more or less automatic. Using a water softener is very easy and offers a wide range of benefits for your entire household. From softer skin and hair after taking a shower to no more water spots on your dishes and glasses, a water softener can dramatically improve the comfort and convenience of your home life. Tony, the technician/plumber from Florida Energy Water & Air, was most pleasant, knowledgeable, professional. He arrived on completed the replacement of very old water heater including nearly 100% disappeance of the "knocking noise" in less than an hour, and cleaned up the work area very nicely at the end. I highly recommend his and FEWA to anyone needing these kind of services. Thanks Tony !
