How Often Should You Add Salt to Your Water Softener?

Most homeowners who own a water softener have a general understanding of how to keep this appliance running. And thankfully, water softeners don’t require loads of maintenance. With that said, there are some basic guidelines to follow when it comes to how often and how much salt to add to the softener’s brine tank. Let’s review a few fundamentals to clear up any confusion and help you keep your water softener operating at peak performance!

The Right Amount of Salt for Your Water Softener

Many of today’s water softening systems only need to have salt added once every six to eight weeks or so. But, instead of focusing on how often to put salt in your water softener, you should focus on how full the brine tank is. In most units, the tank should be between one-third and two-thirds full of salt. To check salt levels, just take a peek in the brink tank. Be sure to refer to your water softener’s owner’s manual for specific instructions on how much salt to add and how often.

Beware of Salt Bridges

If you add too much salt to your water softener, a salt bridge can form at the top of the brine tank. Salt bridges are suspended clumps of hardened salt that cannot be used by the water softener. Salt beneath the bridge can be utilized, but the bridge may cover the rest of the tank and make it appear full when it’s actually empty. It’s a good idea to check for salt bridges once every two to three months and promptly remove them if they occur.

Signs That You Need to Add More Salt to Your Water Softener

Salt contains sodium, an element that plays a vital role in the water softening process. If there’s too little salt in your softener’s brine tank, you’ll begin to see an increase in the hardness of your home’s water. Signs of hard water include:

  • Low water pressure from faucets and shower heads
  • Gunky mineral build-up around faucets and filmy residue in sinks, toilets, and tubs
  • Cloudiness or water spots on freshly washed dishes
  • Odd-tasting coffee, lemonade, pasta, and other foods or beverages prepared with tap water
  • Laundry that looks faded and feels stiffer than normal
  • Skin that feels dry after bathing or handwashing

Tony, the technician/plumber from Florida Energy Water & Air, was most pleasant, knowledgeable, professional. He arrived on completed the replacement of very old water heater including nearly 100% disappeance of the "knocking noise" in less than an hour, and cleaned up the work area very nicely at the end.
