Can a Water Softener Be Taken Along When You Move to a New Home?

Moving comes with plenty of stressors, like collecting endless cardboard boxes and bubble wrap, sorting through belongings you didn’t even know you had, and trying to find the right moving company to carry out the whole production. One thing that you may want to consider in between wrapping china with newspaper and cleaning out old cabinets is what to do with the water softener. If your property’s current water softening system is functioning well and in good shape, you may be able to take it along with you to your new home.

A Few Notes on Moving Water Softeners

It’s true! Some water softening systems can be moved from home to home. But, not all water softeners are designed to be re-plumbed or treat different types of water, as levels of water hardness vary in different parts of the country. Moral of the story? Be sure to do your research and consult with a professional before disconnecting your water softener and packing it away.

It’s also a good idea to ask these questions before making a final decision:

  • Is the purchaser of your current home expecting your water softener to be there?
  • Are you moving to an area with hard groundwater? (Some parts of the country don’t have hard water, so a water softener may not be necessary.)
  • Does your new home already have a water softener?
  • Is the cost of professionally disconnecting your current water heater worth it? (For instance, some very basic water heaters don’t cost much more than the plumber’s fees.)
  • Is your home’s current water heater built to meet the needs of a growing family or larger house?

Tony, the technician/plumber from Florida Energy Water & Air, was most pleasant, knowledgeable, professional. He arrived on completed the replacement of very old water heater including nearly 100% disappeance of the "knocking noise" in less than an hour, and cleaned up the work area very nicely at the end. I highly recommend his and FEWA to anyone needing these kind of services. Thanks Tony !
